Who is responsible
The controller of personal data described in this policy is Daria Lenskaja. You can reach us at hello@astronight.fi.
The short version
This website does not use cookies, advertising or analytics, and it does not load anything from other companies. The AstroNight app keeps your equipment, your session log and your photographs on your own phone, analyses your photographs on the phone and does not require an account. A few public services are contacted for weather, aurora and comet information, and what they receive is explained below.
This website
What we do not collect
We do not set cookies, we do not run analytics or tracking tools, we do not show advertisements, and we do not use fonts, scripts or images from other companies. Everything that your browser needs is served from this website.
What is stored on your device
The red light switch at the top of each page remembers your choice by saving a small value in your browser's local storage. That value stays on your device, is never sent to us and can be removed at any time by clearing the site data in your browser. It is used only to show the page the way you asked for it.
Server logs
Like every website, this one is delivered by a web server, and our hosting provider, Speed Zone, keeps ordinary technical logs that normally include the IP address of the visitor, the time, the page requested and the type of browser. These logs exist to keep the service secure and working, and we do not use them to identify or follow individual visitors. How long the provider keeps them is set by the provider's own policy. Our legal basis for this processing is our legitimate interest in operating a secure website.
When you write to us
If you send an email, we receive your email address, your message and anything else that you choose to include. We use it to answer you and, when a message needs it, to keep a record of what was discussed so that we can help you properly. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering the people who contact us, or, where you ask to be told when the app launches, your consent, which you may withdraw at any time by telling us.
Your address is used for the launch message and is then deleted. Other correspondence is kept for as long as it is needed to deal with your matter and for a reasonable period afterwards, and it is then deleted. We do not sell or rent email addresses and we do not add anyone to a newsletter without being asked.
The AstroNight app
The app is not yet released, and this section describes how it is designed to work so that you can decide about it beforehand. If the way it works changes, this policy will be updated before the change reaches you.
Stored on your phone only
Your saved equipment, your session log, your history and the photographs you attach to sessions are stored on your phone. We do not receive them, and the app does not need an account. When you add a photograph for analysis, the pixels are examined by the app itself on your phone and the photograph is not uploaded.
Location
The app can ask for your location while you are using it, so that it can work out the hours of darkness and the darkness of your sky. You may decline and choose a place by typing its name instead. Your location is used on the phone, and we do not receive it. When you type a place name, the text you type may be sent to Apple's location search service, which is part of iOS, and Apple's own privacy terms apply to that.
Information fetched from public services
To show the weather at your location, the app sends the approximate coordinates of that location to Open Meteo. To show the aurora forecast it retrieves public data from the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, to show comets it retrieves public data from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory services, and to show a picture and a short description of a target it retrieves them from Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. Each of these services can see the IP address of your connection, as any website can. We do not operate them, and they do not send us anything about you.
What we do not do
The app does not contain advertising, does not contain analytics or tracking software from other companies, and does not share your information with advertisers or data brokers.
Other companies and services
Apart from our hosting provider, and the public services mentioned for the app, we do not pass personal data to other companies. The website contains a few links to other websites, such as the source of the city dataset, and once you follow a link the policy of that website applies instead of this one.
Your rights
Under the European data protection rules you have the right to know what data we hold about you, to have mistakes corrected, to have your data deleted, to limit or object to its use, to receive it in a portable form and to withdraw a consent that you have given. To use any of these rights you only need to write to hello@astronight.fi.
You are also entitled to complain to the supervisory authority. In Finland this is the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman (tietosuoja.fi), and if you live elsewhere in the European Economic Area you may contact the authority in your own country.
Children
This website and the app are meant for a general audience, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe that a child has sent us personal data, please write to us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
When something in this policy changes, the date at the top of the page is updated, and when a change is important we will say so on the home page as well.
Questions
If anything here is unclear, please ask at hello@astronight.fi. You may also want to read the terms and conditions.
